Sinus Surgery Date Confirmed | Fred’s Eviction Notice Served

Hey everyone,

I received word this afternoon that the tumor in my head must come out immediately, and that my immune system therapy (might/might not) happen tomorrow, however, I have made the decision to move ahead regardless of getting the IVIg or not.  Below is the CT scan of starting at the upper portion of my sinus going upward.  The tumor has started to invade my left oracular cavity, and is pushing into my left frontal lobe of my brain substantially.

With this decision, unfortunately, I have made an accommodation request at the hospital as to a private room with maximum hospital hygiene and infection control protocols.  Unfortunately, I will NOT be able to see anyone (outside of my wife) during my stay at the hospital due to my immune system issues, and possible complications of going to the one places you don’t want to be when you are immunocompromised.  I will be a text message away, and my wife will be the liaison for any updates via the blog, or text.

I contacted my entire care team this afternoon to inform them of my consent of the procedure, and I am aware of all the risks, however, I think this is the best path forward as my vision issues are progressively worsening faster, as well as everything else.  I have already pre-registered for the surgery, and the above accommodations have been set, as well as the $448 for my portion of the co-pay of the procedure.  My wife will have power of attorney during the procedure and during recovery as well.

I will probably be off the air for a bit, as the recovery from the surgery will take at least 2 weeks.  I will do my best to keep the blog up to date once I can get up on my feet again.

Details:

Saturday @ 5:30am Check-in, going under @ 7:30am
Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center (PSL)
Team: ENT, Immunologist, Anesthesiologist

Procedures:

  • Septoplasty
  • Bilateral Turbinate Reduction
  • Bilaterally Maxillary Antrostomy
  • Left Total Ethmoidectomy
  • Left Frontal Sinusotomy
  • Frontal Sinus Trephination
The duration of the surgery is roughly between 7:30am – 10:30am (3 hours).  I will then be placed into a quarantined area during recovery, as well as a private room following the recovery portion.  They will be keeping me inpatient for 1-2 days depending on my outcome.
As much as I would love visitors at home, my Immunologist has told me no visitors while I am recovering at home, and I have to abide by that.  Again, I’ll be around after a few days, but if I don’t reply, I’m probably out cold.  My wife will be taking care of me while I am down & out, you are welcome to reach out to her as well.  My next IVIg infusion is scheduled for May 3rd, so perhaps after that, I can start to see people at home.
Thank you to everyone who has supported me as this journey continues.  As the clock ticks down to Saturday, the anxiety and nervousness will probably start to set in (I’ve never done well with going down).

Update:

Just got word my IVIg was approved.  I’m scheduled for Thursday @ 1:30pm to get the remaining 20g.

Love always,
John
